Spearfish Barista, Gives Back to Community
Alexandra “Peedee’’ Doyle created a mobile coffee shop that brings fresh-brewed java to customers’ front doors. She makes sure to use local products, and she emphasizes giving back to her community by donating to local charities on a regular basis. Read more.
Covered Bridge Stands Again
With a fund-raising effort the Edgemont community once again has the only public covered bridge in the Northern Great Plains. The bridge is a tourist draw for the downtown area, the local museum and the park. Read more.
Community “Repair Men”
SHIFT GARAGE is a volunteer based mechanic shop located in Rapid City. These volunteers lend their auto skills to repair vehicles for those in need. SHIFT fixes around 150 cars each year. Read more.
Residents Fund New Children’s Center
With a generous gift from long-time Sturgis residents Albert and Laverne Elliot, the community library recently dedicated a new Children’s Learning Center and Community Room. Read more.
Life of “Big Shot’’ Becky Hammon
Rapid City native Becky Hammon, a prolific scorer High School, was considered too small to be a major college player. Proving everyone wrong she went on to play 16 years in the WNBA and became the first woman assistant coach in NBA history. Read more.
Rapid City Man Donates Kidney
Jim White donated a kidney to Woope Claymore, who was 16 years old when she was diagnosed with lupus, which led to dialysis for her deteriorating kidneys. Jim being a match helped Woope live for another 16 years. Read more.
Mount Rushmore Goes Green
Visitors to Mount Rushmore National Memorial are seeing the results of a sustainability initiative with the installation last spring of an array of 975 solar panels. These panels with generate about 500,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. Read more.
BHSU Emphasizes Sustainability
Black Hills State University has made environmental awareness a priority for its campus and its programs. In 2017 the university earned recognition from three national groups for its campus sustainability initiatives. Read more.
