About 2017 tour of Mid-West Ambassadors of Music

SD Ambassadors of Music

The Mid-West Ambassadors of Music just completed their 17th biannual (June 27-July 12, 2017) tour to Europe. The group was comprised of students from South Dakota high schools who were selected based on their character and musical ability. They were nominated by their band or choral directors. The students were accompanied on their tour by music educators. Many of these music educators also performed in the band or choral ensembles. The group with some family members numbered 203 persons.

The Ambassadors of Music program is a wonderful musical experience, as well as a superb cultural experience for these students. Concerts were given in most of the countries visited. Students learn about the culture of each country visited. The tour started with a stop at Windsor Castle before touring London. In London, they visited the Tower of London, saw the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, experienced the London Eye, visited Westminster Abbey, Kensington Palace, and Park, and attended a London musical, Wicked. The chorus performed in the church where John Wesley began the Methodist Church. In Paris, they had a city tour and also experienced the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, The Louvre, Mount Montmartre and The Arch de Trump. In Switzerland, they traveled to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn, toured the Castle of Chillon, and attended a cultural exchange concert and dance in Crans-Montana. In Austria, they sang in Wilton’s Basilica, Seefeld, Austria. They toured Old Innsbruck and the community of Seefeld. They traveled on a day trip to Venice where the choir sang in St. Mark’s Basilica. The last leg of the tour included a somber stop at Dachau Concentration Camp outside of Munich. The tour ended at the medieval walled city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany.

The Mid-West Ambassadors of Music (name change to South Dakota Ambassadors of Music with 2019 tour) began in 1985 with the first tour under the direction of Dr. Darwin Walker, Professor of Music at SD State University. He led twelves tours from 1985-2007. Michael Likness, Britton, SD, lead the 2009-2013 tours. Jerome Letcher, Aberdeen, SD, has led the tour since 2013. He is a retired public school music educators for 40 years and currently is an adjunct staff at Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD. His first tour with the Ambassadors of Music as a staff member was in 2001.

Since 1985, approximately 3200 students, staff, and adult travelers have had this wonderful musical and cultural experience.

For the 2017 tour, the choral conductors were Dr. Laura Diddle, Director of Choral Activities at SD State University. and Ann Deckert, Rapid City Stevens High School choral director. Lisa Zahn, Mobridge High School choral director, served as choral accompanist.
